  Vancomycin is a carbohydrate antibiotic which consists of the amino sugar vancomycin, 2-ßhydroxychlorotyrosine, 3-phenylaminoacetic acid derivatives, N-methylleucine, and aspartic acid. Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic that has traditionally been used as a "last-line drug" to treat serious infections where all antibiotics have failed.
